The IRS Has Extended The Tax Filing & Payment Deadline Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic

The pandemic has made everything look a little different this year, including how we file our taxes. It’s not as easy to get in to see an accountant when offices are closed and contact is limited. Even if you plan ahead and are able to get your information in to an accountant on time, the accountant may not be able to keep up with the work load because of reduced capacities. Take into account that everyone seems to be less productive because of mental and emotional stress, and things aren’t really getting done on deadline.

With all that in mind, the IRS has extended the tax filing and payment deadline this year from April 15 to May 17. The deadline has not been extended as far as it was last year when the quarantine was relatively fresh, but it does give people that bit of extra time to get their paperwork in order and take care of their tax obligations.

The IRS Is Reminding Taxpayers To Meet Their Tax Obligations

However, even though the deadline has been extended, the IRS is reminding everyone that they are still required to meet their obligations, and that the agency is prepared to enforce all tax laws, including penalizing anyone who fraudulently misrepresented their tax liability or who attempts to evade their liability.

In a press release, the acting deputy assistant attorney general of the Tax Division, Stuart Goldberg, said, “Our criminal prosecutors are prepared for tax filing season, too. Honest, law-abiding taxpayers should know that the Tax Division is aggressively using its resources and expertise to identify, investigate, and prosecute those attempting to defraud and obstruct the IRS.”

The IRS investigates and prosecutes a wide variety of tax offenses, from individuals underreporting their taxes to businesses using off-shore accounts to hide their assets. The agency is prepared to investigate and prosecute all types of tax infractions. No violations are too big or too small for the agency to address.

It is important that you consult with a professional tax attorney in Phoenix to better understand your tax obligations and to compile a complete and accurate tax return. You can face serious fines and penalties if any violations or omissions are found. You may even face criminal penalties if the violations were found to be intentional.
