Arizona Department of Revenue Issues New Adult Use Marijuana Website
Tax Lawyers Discuss AZDOR’s New Tax Assistance Website For Marijuana Businesses
Marijuana continues to be a federally illegal substance even though most states across the country allow legal sales, either recreationally, medicinally, or both. In November 2020, Arizona voters passed Prop 207 to become the thirteenth state to legalize “recreational” marijuana for adult possession and consumption.
Marijuana Businesses Must Register With AZDOR & Get A Transaction Privilege Tax Licence
As in other states, Arizona businesses growing, producing, and selling cannabis at retail are subject to significant state and local taxes. The Arizona Department of Revenue (AZDOR) is now charged with collecting a transaction privilege tax (TPT) and excise tax on sales of cannabis. Marijuana businesses must also register with AZDOR to begin filing their tax returns and paying their applicable TPT and excise tax.
In order to assist Arizona marijuana businesses, the AZDOR has set up a live web page: Adult Use Marijuana. The page outlines tax requirements, FAQs, and other necessary information to ensure that marijuana business get into compliance and stay in compliance with their Arizona tax obligations.
AZDOR Is Reaching Marijuana Business Owners For Tax Education
In addition, the AZDOR has started an outreach unit to educate marijuana business owners on their new tax obligations. The outreach unit will begin connecting with these businesses and can be reached directly at AZTaxHelp@azdor.gov.
In addition to state tax requirements, marijuana businesses must also be in compliance with federal law. To that end, IRS has recently released its own marijuana business webpage: Marijuana Industry.
